Diagnostic Ultrasound

What to Expect During Your First Visit

To fully understand the condition of your veins, your first visit to Refine Vein Center will include a diagnostic ultrasound scan performed by our registered vascular ultrasound technician (RVT). This quick, painless exam allows us to evaluate the structure and function of your veins in real time.

Here’s how it works:

Ultrasound gel is applied to your legs
A small handheld probe is gently moved across the skin
Sound waves create images of both superficial and deep veins
Valve function is checked to see if blood is flowing properly
No radiation is used

The scan provides valuable information about whether your veins are narrowing, blocked, or allowing blood to flow backward (a condition called venous reflux).

Why a Vein Disease Diagnosis Matters

Vein disease is common, especially in adults over 40, but symptoms don’t always show up right away or appear where you expect them. That’s why imaging and evaluation are essential—even when veins look normal on the surface.

At Refine Vein Center, we use duplex ultrasound to assess both blood flow and vein anatomy. This allows Dr. Reynolds to detect early signs of chronic venous insufficiency or other vein disorders, even when symptoms seem mild or inconsistent.

The information from your scan helps determine:

Whether you have underlying vein disease
Which veins are affected
Whether conservative care or procedural treatment is best
What type of insurance documentation may be needed

Your First Visit: What’s Included

A full review of your symptoms
A physical exam
A diagnostic duplex ultrasound
A discussion of findings and diagnosis
A personalized treatment plan, if needed

Why Choose Refine Vein Center for Vein Diagnostics?

Frequently Asked Questions

A diagnostic vein ultrasound generally requires little or no special preparation. Before your visit, be ready to discuss your symptoms, medical history, medications, and any previous vein treatments. Refine Vein Center will let you know if any instructions apply to your specific evaluation.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your legs. You may need to remove clothing from the area being examined or change into a gown so the registered vascular ultrasound technician can move the probe along your skin.

A diagnostic vein ultrasound commonly takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on whether one or both legs need to be examined and how detailed the study must be.

Your complete first visit may take longer because it can also include a review of your symptoms and medical history, a physical exam, discussion of the findings, and treatment planning when appropriate.

You may be asked to stand or change positions so the ultrasound technician can evaluate how blood moves through your veins under the effects of gravity.

Standing can make it easier to identify backward blood flow, known as venous reflux, and determine whether the vein valves are working properly.

Most patients can drive and return to work or their usual activities after a diagnostic vein ultrasound. The exam is noninvasive and does not use needles, anesthesia, or radiation.

Refine Vein Center will provide different instructions if another test or procedure is scheduled for the same day.
