Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) affects approximately 15% of the population and causes tingling, burning, numbness, and even aching in the lower extremities when trying to sleep. Symptoms are typically worse at night or during moments of relaxation, and they usually improve with physical activity.

RLS and Venous Insufficiency

A common but usually overlooked cause of RLS is venous insufficiency. Approximately 22% of RLS sufferers also suffer from venous insufficiency. When someone suffering from both conditions has their venous insufficiency treated, their RLS likely improves as well. This was the result for 98% of cases. 80% of cases expressed long-term improvements, although not a forever fix. This is good news for those experiencing either venous insufficiency or RLS, and we encourage everyone to have a duplex ultrasound done to identify the root cause of your discomfort so you can begin treatment.

How Is RLS Treated?

At Refine Vein Center, we will do a complete evaluation to identify the root cause of your discomfort. Our tests will include a diagnostic ultrasound to know the state of your veins, and we will then know if venous insufficiency is a likely cause of your RLS symptoms. We will suggest the best treatment options for your case, usually involving laser treatment and sclerotherapy, and we will accompany you through every step of the process.
